Logan Stankoven posted his first career hat trick after Andrei Svechnikov scored two first-period power play goals as the Carolina Hurricanes ripped the Vancouver Canucks 7-2 on Thursday night at Raleigh, N.C.
Sean Walker notched his first career four-assist game, and Shayne Gostisbehere, Jackson Blake and Taylor Hall all had two assists. Pyotr Kochetkov made 18 saves, helping Carolina’s winning streak reach three games. The Hurricanes, who never led in their first two home games last week, scored three times on five shots on goal in the first 9 1/2 minutes.
Jake DeBrusk scored twice and Elias Pettersson added two assists for Vancouver, which dropped the opening game of its six-game road trip.
Canucks goalie Kevin Lankinen made 12 saves on 18 shots across two periods before Leevi Merilainen was in the net for the third, stopping 15 of 16 shots.
Bruins 6, Mammoth 1
David Pastrnak broke out for two power-play goals and two assists, leading Boston to a win over visiting Utah.
All five of Boston’s goal-scorers — Pastrnak, Morgan Geekie (one goal, two assists), Matthew Poitras (one goal, one assist), Casey Mittelstadt and Mason Lohrei — had entered the game without lighting the lamp this season. Bruins goalie Jeremy Swayman made 36 saves, including 17 in the first period alone.
Boston College product Jack McBain scored the lone goal for Utah, which has lost two of its past three.
Avalanche 7, Flames 3
Cale Makar scored twice in a three-point game in his hometown and both Devon Toews and Jaden Schwartz notched a pair of goals to lead visiting Colorado past Calgary.
Nathan MacKinnon scored once and added two assists for the Avalanche, who have won three of four games to start the season. Goaltender Scott Wedgewood made 26 saves to record the win in his 200th career game and Brett Kulak netted two assists.
Adam Klapka, Mikael Backlund and Kevin Bahl replied for the Flames, who have lost all four games to start the season by a combined score of 23-6, and sit at the bottom of the league standings. Goalie Devin Cooley stopped 23 shots.
Golden Knights 4, Maple Leafs 3 (OT)
Trevor Connelly scored on a backhand shot in the fifth round of a shootout as Vegas rallied from an early three-goal deficit to defeat Toronto in Las Vegas.
It was the first career shootout try for Connelly, a 20-year-old rookie. Jack Eichel scored on a penalty shot and also had an assist and Mark Stone and Brett Howden also scored in regulation for Vegas, which won its third straight game.
Jack Roslovic, Easton Cowan and Nick Paul scored goals for Toronto, which was opening a three-game western road trip. Sergei Bobrovsky finished with a season-high 40 saves while falling to 0-2-1.
Predators 5, Canadiens 2
Ryan O’Reilly scored the go-ahead goal on the power play with 3:16 remaining in the third period, lifting visiting Nashville to a victory over Montreal.
Defenseman Adam Edstrom sealed the win with a pair of empty-net goals for the Predators, who scored five unanswered goals to snap a five-game losing streak to the Canadiens. Alexander Kerfoot and Matthew Wood each scored a goal during the second period and Juuse Saros made 32 saves.
Captain Nick Suzuki and Alex Newhook each scored a goal in the second period for the Canadiens, who have lost three in a row (0-2-1).
Stars 4, Sabres 0
Mikko Rantanen had a goal and three assists and Jake Oettinger made 26 saves in his second straight shutout, helping visiting Dallas shut out Buffalo.
Wyatt Johnston had three assists and Jason Robertson, Sam Steel and Roope Hintz also scored for the Stars. Dallas scored its final three goals in a span of less than six minutes in the second period.
Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 14 saves for the Sabres, who had won two in a row after dropping their season opener. Buffalo had 18 shots on goal to Dallas’ 26.
Lightning 3, Wild 2
John Carlson scored his first two goals with Tampa Bay, Nikita Kucherov posted two assists and the Lightning finished a sweep of their three-game homestand by edging Minnesota.
Anthony Cirelli added a marker as the Lightning won in the debut of new backup goaltender Dennis Hildeby, who made 34 saves.
Quinn Hughes notched a goal and an assist and Blake Coleman scored on the power play for the Wild, who failed to earn a point for the first time in four outings this season (2-1-1). Jesper Wallstedt stopped 32 shots in his fourth straight start.
Senators 2, Flyers 1
Carter Yakemchuk scored a power-play goal with 6:59 left to lift Ottawa to a victory over struggling Philadelphia.
With the game tied at 1-1, Michael Bunting — playing his first game with Philadelphia — was whistled for hooking. Late in the power play, former Flyers star Claude Giroux set up Yakemchuk’s one-timer from the blue line that got through traffic and past Joseph Woll. Nick Cousins, another former Flyer, scored the other goal for the Senators.
Matvei Michkov tallied the only goal for Philadelphia, which has lost its first five games of the young campaign.
Islanders 4, Blackhawks 1
Bo Horvat opened and closed the scoring for New York, which never trailed in a win over Chicago.
Emil Heineman and Anthony Duclair scored within a three-minute span in the second period for the Islanders, who have split their first four games. New York goalie Ilya Sorokin carried a shutout deep into the third period and finished with 22 saves. Sorokin has allowed just one goal total in two home starts this season.
Frank Nazar spoiled Sorokin’s shutout bid with 2:34 left for the Blackhawks, who have dropped four of their first five games. Arvid Soderblom recorded 15 saves.
Sharks 3, Blues 2 (OT)
Darnell Nurse scored 1:03 into overtime to give San Jose a win at St. Louis.
The Sharks twice equalized in regulation while improving to 3-1-0, with all three victories coming in OT. Tyler Toffoli had a goal and an assist while Collin Graf also tallied for San Jose. Alex Nedeljkovic stopped 24 of 26 shots for the victory in his season debut.
Connor McMichael and Dillon Dube scored for the Blues, who are 0-2-1 since winning their opener. Joel Hofer made 24 saves.
